The Philippine Canine Club, Inc. (PCCI) will be the host for the FCI ASIA AND PACIFIC SECTION SHOW 2012. The PCCI will be holding a total of six (6) all-breed championship dog shows on February 24 to 26, 2012 to be held at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City, Philippines. The shows will be adjudicated by well-known international judges from Columbia, Slovenia, Finland, Israel, Japan, Hongkong, Pakistan, Singapore & Taiwan. The weekend will consist of SIX (6) shows in a span of 3 days.

A Labradoodle is a crossbred or hybrid dog created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Standard or Miniature Poodle.
The Labradoodle was first deliberately bred in 1989, when Australian breeder Wally Conronfirst crossed the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle for Guide Dogs Victoria. His aim was to combine the low-shedding coat of the Poodle with the gentleness and trainability of the Labrador, and to provide a guide dog suitable for people with allergies to fur and dander. Guide Dogs Victoria continue to breed Labradoodles and Labradoodles are often used around the world as guide, assistance and therapy dogs as well as being popular family dogs.

The Labradoodle as a dog breed is still developing, and does not yet "breed true," i.e., puppies do not have consistently predictable characteristics. While many Labradoodles display desired traits, their appearance and behavioral characteristics remain, from an overall breed standpoint, unpredictable.

There is no universal consensus as to whether breeders should aim to have Labradoodles recognized as a breed . Some breeders prefer to restrict breeding to early generation dogs (i.e. bred from a Poodle and Labrador rather than from two Labradoodles) to maximise genetic diversity, to avoid the inherited health problems that have plagued some dog breeds.

Others are breeding Labradoodle to Labradoodle over successive generations, and trying to establish a new dog breed. These dogs are usually referred to as Multigenerational (abr. Multigen) or Australian Labradoodles . Australian Labradoodles also differ from early generation and Multigenerational Labradoodles in that they may also have other breeds in their ancestry. English and American Cocker Spaniel/Poodle crosses (ie Cockapoos), Two Irish Water Spaniels and Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers have variously been used in some Australian Labradoodle lines. The Curly Coated Retriever were used too, but these lines did not work out and they were discontinued.

Labradoodle coats are generally divided into 3 categories: Wool (with tight curls, and similar in appearance to that of a Poodle, but with a softer texture); Fleece (soft and free-flowing, with a kinked or wavy appearance); or Hair (which can be curly, straight or wavy, but is more similar in texture to a Labrador's coat). Labradoodles come in a wide variety of colours, including chocolate, cafe, parchment, cream, gold, apricot, red, black, silver, chalk, parti colours and generally all the colours that can be found in Poodles. They also can be different sizes, depending on the size of poodle (i.e. toy, miniature or standard) used.

The American Hairless Terrier is a breed of dog that was formerly considered a variant of Rat Terrier. As of January 1, 2004, the United Kennel Club deemed the AHT a separate terrier breed. It is often mistaken for a hairless Chihuahua.

Reputedly, the breed started when one hairless puppy appeared in one Rat Terrier litter in the state of Louisiana, United States, in 1972. Owners Edwin and Willie Scott liked the dog's look and temperament, and upon maturity bred her hoping to reproduce the hairless quality. They were eventually successful; a litter produced in 1981 provided the foundation stock of the breed.

Recognition
In 1998 the breed gained recognition as the American Hairless Terrier by the American Rare Breeds Association and the National Rat Terrier Club. Canada was the first country outside the US to gain recognition, by Canadian Rarities in 1999. In 1999 the breed was recognized as Rat Terrier, Hairless Variety by the United Kennel Club. The UKC is the only governing body that recognizes the breed. While this organization is a national body, the breed is waiting for an international official breakthrough.
In the US the American Hairless Terrier Association is the provisional breed club. Other National Breed Clubs around the world include the Canadian American Hairless Terrier Association and the Japanese Hairless American Terrier Club.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog breed of Terrier type, developed in the 1800s in the historical area of Yorkshire in England. The defining features of the breed are its small size and its silky blue and tan coat. The breed is nicknamed Yorkie and is placed in the Toy Terrier section of the Terrier Group by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and in the Toy Group or Companion Group by other kennel clubs, although all agree that the breed is a terrier. A winning showdog and a popular companion dog, the Yorkshire Terrier has also been part of the development of other breeds, such as the Australian Silky Terrier. They are not good dogs for children because they are very fragile.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog, weighing 3.2 kg (7 lbs) or less, with a glossy, long silky coat that hangs straight from a part that runs along the middle of the head, back, and tail. The coat is dark blue on the back with a tan chest and tan on the head and legs, a pattern described as "tan with a blue saddle." Small erect ears are covered with short, deep tan colored fur. The tail was traditionally docked but today the Yorkshire Terrier often has a big butt a long tail, held a little above the level of the back, with long blue fur parted down the middle. Like most dogs bred to be pets rather than working dogs, breed standards contain detailed descriptions of precise colors and placement of markings, as well as body proportions and structure. Most importantly, according to the Standard, a Yorkshire Terrier should have a general look of self confidence, "conveying an important air".
For adult Yorkshire Terriers, the importance is placed on its coat color, its quality, and its texture. The hair must be glossy, fine, straight, and silky. Traditionally the coat is grown-out long and is parted down the middle of the back, but "must never impede movement."

From the back of the neck to the base of the tail, the coat should be a dark gray to a steel-blue, and the hair on the tail should be a darker blue. On the head, high chest, and legs, the hair should be a bright, rich tan, darker at the roots than in the middle, that shades into a lighter tan at the tips. Also, in adult dogs, there should be no dark hairs intermingled with any of the tan colored fur.

Yorkshire Terrier puppies are not born with their adults coats. Yorkies are born black with tan points and slowly transition in to their adults coats over many months, even years. As an adult, a Yorkie can be black and tan, blue and tan, blue and gold, or black and gold.

A newborn Yorkie puppy is born black with tan points on the muzzle, above the eyes, around the legs and feet, the inside of the ears, and the underside of the tail. Occasionally Yorkies are born with a white "star" on the chest or on one or more toes. These markings fade with age, and are usually gone within a few months. A white "star" on the chest is generally an indication that the puppy will be a good coat grower in quantity, but not necessarily quality.

The Alaskan Husky is not so much a breed of dog as it is a type or a category. It falls short of being a breed in that there is no preferred type and no restriction as to ancestry; it is defined only by its purpose, which is that of a highly efficient sled dog. That said, dog drivers usually distinguish between the Alaskan Husky and “hound crosses”, so perhaps there is informal recognition that the Alaskan Husky is expected to display a degree of northern dog type. Specializations in type exist within the breed, such as freighting dogs (Mackenzie River Husky), sprint Alaskans, and distance Alaskans. Most Alaskan Huskies have pointy ears, meaning they are in fact classified as a spitz-type dog.

The Alaskan is the sled dog of choice for world-class dog sled racing sprint competition. None of the purebred northern breeds can match it for sheer racing speed. Demanding speed-racing events such as the Fairbanks, Alaska Open North American Championship and the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous are invariably won by teams of Alaskan huskies, or of Alaskans crossed with hounds or gun dogs. Hounds are valued for their toughness and endurance. Winning speeds often average more than 19 miles per hour (31 km/h) over three days' racing at 20 to 30 miles (32 to 48 km) each day.

Alaskan huskies that fulfill the demanding performance standards of world-class dogsled racing are extremely valuable. A top-level racing lead dog can be worth $10-15,000. Alaskans that fail to meet the performance standards of the musher who bred them often go on to be sold to less competitive mushers, allowing them to continue to run.

Appearance

The Alaskan Husky is a mixed-breed dog in which northern or husky-type ancestry, such as the Siberian Husky or the traditional Alaskan village dog, predominates. Many other breeds have contributed to its genetic makeup, including the wolf, Staghound, Foxhound, Greyhound, Doberman etc; these diverse breed contributions account for the Alaskans great variability of appearance.

Alaskan Huskies (at least those used for speed racing) are moderate in size, averaging perhaps 46 to 60 pounds (21 to 25 kg) for males and 38 to 42 pounds (17 to 19 kg) for females. Some of them superficially resemble racing strains of the Siberian Husky breed (which is undeniably part of the Alaskan Husky genetic mix), but are usually taller and larger with more pronounced tuck-up.

Temperament

Racing sled dogs are bred for stamina, strength, agility, and endurance. A positive working attitude is essential. Sled dogs that come in contact with the public at races or in excursion businesses must not be aggressive toward humans. They do attack children and other small animals, an average of 4 children a year are attacked and mauled or killed.

Alaskan huskies are popular as pets in Alaska; older dogs that have outlived their usefulness as racing dogs make excellent pets for people willing to exercise them regularly. Young huskies make good pets if given plenty of space to run and play, but their high demand for exercise and activity makes them a poor choice for urban residents.

Huskies are often healthier in drier climates such as that of interior Alaska. In the more humid regions, they are prone to develop ear and related infections.

History

The Alaskan Husky is derived from a mix of northern types, most notably the Siberian Husky. The history of the Alaskan Husky really began with the Gold Rushes of the late nineteenth century; sled and draft dogs used by miners of that era were typically heavy draft dogs with obvious Saint Bernard ancestry. The importation into Alaska of dogs from across the Bering Strait in Siberia in 1908 and subsequent years changed Alaskan sled dogs radically and permanently towards a smaller dog with lighter weight and much greater speed. With the increasing prevalence of motorized winter transport in the mid twentieth century, working sled dogs became less common in the northern villages. The Alaskan sled dog experienced a revival in the 1970s. George Attla, a Native Alaskan from the village of Huslia, was largely responsible for this. Many successful racing dogs today trace their lineage back to Attla dogs.

The Coton de Tuléar is a small breed.It is named after the city of Tulear in Madagascar, and for its cottony textured coat.

Appearance

Multiple registries with differing standards describe the Coton de Tuléar, but in general, it has very soft hair, comparable to a cotton ball, a prominent black nose, large expressive eyes (usually covered by bangs) and somewhat short puffy legs.

Coat and color

The Coton de Tuléar has medium-length to long hair (about four to six inches), fluffy, cotton-like coat that is hair rather than fur. Since it is a non-shedding breed with no dander, it is hypoallergenic (like the poodle) and has no "doggie smell".

This breed has little to no shedding.

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale standard specifies that the Coton's coat should be white but may also have lemon color on their ears and body, but the coat must be primarily white with no black hair allowed. The US-based Coton de Tulear Club of America allows for three different but equally favorable colorings: white, black-and-white and tri-color which includes "honeybear". White is described as nearly all white, sometimes with champagne coloring on the ears, face or back. Black-and-white is defined as pure white with prominent black patches on the head and body (no ratio of white-to-black is specified or favored). Tri-color is described as mostly white with some brown markings and dustings of black on the body and head. A honey bear tri-color has light brown with black tips which gradually fades to off white or lemon color. The tri-color loses the most color of any of the color varieties usually becoming mostly white with possibly some champagne markings and a dusting of black hairs on the ears and/or body.

Size

The international Fédération Cynologique Internationale standard gives the Coton's weight as from 4 to 6 kg (about 9 to 13 lb) for males and 3.5 to 5 kg (8 to 11 lb) for females. The Coton's height (including tolerance) is from 25 to 30 cm (about 10 to 12 inches) tall for males and from 22 to 27 cm (8½ to 10½ inches) for females.

By contrast, the Coton de Tulear Club of America standard specifies the weight as no more than 18 lb (8 kg) with the average being between 11-15 pounds. The standard height is 9 to 13 inches (33 cm), except for the rare Tall Coton, which is 14 to 16 inches (43 cm) high.

The Tall Coton shows up in all three colors, and can be born to a litter with normal sized parents that carry the appropriate genes. These long-limbed dogs are exceptionally agile and graceful.

History

The Coton de Tulear developed on the Island of Madagascar and is still the island's national dog. The Coton's ancestors were brought to Madagascar in the 16th and 17th century on pirate ships. Madagascar was a haven for pirates and pirate graveyards can still be seen there. Pirates established the only democratic kingdom for themselves on St. Mary's Island, Madagascar and took Malagasy wives. Whether the dogs were brought along to control rats on the ships, as companions for long voyages or were confiscated from other ships as booty, no one knows. Tulear is a port which is now also known as Toliara. The Coton is of the Bichon dog type, linked most closely to the now-extinct Bichon Tenerife and Tenerife Terrier. There have been many stories circulating about the history of the Coton in recent years. Most of them are untrue. The Coton de Tulear was never feral on Madagascar. It did not hunt wild boar or alligators. It was a companion dog of the Merina (the ruling tribe) in Madagascar. It has very little prey drive and is not a hunting dog.

The cottony coat may be the result of a single gene mutation. This small, friendly dog caught the fancy of the Malagasy royalty and they were the only people allowed to keep Cotons. When Dr. Robert Jay Russell http://www.cotonclub.com discovered the breed in Madagascar in 1973 and brought the first ones to America, he coined the phrase the Royal Dog of Madagascar and the name stuck. They were also imported occasionally into France by returning French colonists but weren't officially imported to Europe until the 1970's.

In a new, year-long University of Pennsylvania survey of dog owners who use confrontational or aversive methods to train aggressive pets, veterinary researchers have found that most of these animals will continue to be aggressive unless training techniques are modified.

The study, published in the current issue of Applied Animal Behavior Science, also showed that using non-aversive or neutral training methods such as additional exercise or rewards elicited very few aggressive responses.

“Nationwide, the No. 1 reason why dog owners take their pet to a veterinary behaviorist is to manage aggressive behavior,” Meghan E. Herron, lead author of the study, said. “Our study demonstrated that many confrontational training methods, whether staring down dogs, striking them or intimidating them with physical manipulation does little to correct improper behavior and can elicit aggressive responses.”

Poo-Chi (or Poochi or Poochie) was a robot dog, created by Tiger Toys after the success of the Furby. It is one of the first generations of robopet toys. Poo-Chi was originally designed by artist Samuel James Lloyd and manufactured by Sega Toys. After becoming a huge hit in Japan they made a deal with Tiger Toys to distribute it in North America.
The Poo-Chi had 5 sensors on its body: Touch, Light, Sound, IR, and the 'bone sensor', which was just a set of magnets. Each sensor made Poo-Chi do something different, and the amount each sensor was used determined what kind of mood Poo-Chi would be in. The IR sensor was used to 'talk' to other Robo-Chi pets, such as other Poo-Chis, Super Poo-Chis, Meow-Chis, Dino-Chis, Chirpy-Chis and Petal-Chis. How ever, they were unable to speak with Furbies. Poo-Chi spoke using pre-recorded sounds such as barks, whines, and growls. These, were not very realistic and often sounded more like 'beeps' than anything.

Many of the usually bustling Manila streets were empty of traffic. Police reported few crimes.

Pacquiao (48-3-2, 36 knockouts) came up two weight classes to fight de la Hoya (39-6) who dropped down to meet him at 147 pounds. De la Hoya, who has become richest and most marketable star in boxing over a 16-year span, had a big reach advantage and towered over Pacquiao, setting off fears he could outpunch the Filipino star.

When de la Hoya declined to come out after the eighth round of the Las Vegas bout, the cheering and jeers rose to a roar here as followers yelled Pacquiao's name, waved Philippine flags and threw punches in the air.

"Superb, that's David slaying Goliath," said Enrique Ancheta, 67, who along with about 2,000 fans jammed a small stadium in the agricultural city of Cauayan, about 175 miles northeast of Manila.

President Arroyo, a key supporter of Pacquiao, called to congratulate him.

"His triumph is again a great unifier of Filipinos," Mrs. Arroyo's spokesman Jesus Dureza said. "While he was an underdog to bookies and matchmakers abroad, he was already a winner to all Filipinos."

Amid a surfeit of problems hounding the country, Pacquiao was a "saving grace," Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.

"The winnings of Manny Pacquiao always come at the proper time," Ermita said. "We have this economic downturn, suddenly the morale of the Filipino people is promptly boosted."

Pacquiao's mother, Dionisia, said she could not stand watching her son square off with a bigger foe.

"I was nervous in the beginning because Oscar de la Hoya was big. I didn't want to watch and I just ran to the prayer room with my friends," she said. "Our prayers were powerful."

Innovative Surgery Provides New Lease On Life To Dogs

Only six months after undergoing a unique and innovative surgery at Michigan State University, Jake – part dog and now part machine – spends his time working out on an underwater treadmill, traversing obstacle courses and prancing around pain free.

Jake, an 11-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, was the first dog in the Midwest and only the 11th in the world to undergo surgery for a new, cementless elbow prosthesis last April. The procedure, done at MSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital by veterinary orthopedic surgeon Loic Dejardin, has left Jake pain free from elbow arthritis.

Without the surgery, Jake would have dealt with severe pain for the rest of his life.

Dejardin has helped MSU’s hospital become one of the first four institutions in the country to offer this elbow prosthesis, which has potential applications for human joint replacements as well.

“Jake’s case has been an absolute success,” said Dejardin, who has performed three more elbow prosthetic surgeries and is preparing for another this week. “The work we are doing here is transforming veterinary care.”

Jake was referred to MSU by veterinarian Sarah Shull of Grand Rapids’ Family Friends Veterinary Hospital and Pet Care Center, where he now undergoes intensive physical rehabilitation under the guidance of Kim Selbee. Dan and Sue Falk of Grands Rapids are Jake’s owners. full story here.

A gene mutation that causes high levels of uric acid in all Dalmatian dogs and bladder stones in some Dalmatians, has been identified by a team of researchers in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis.

The discovery equips dog breeders with the tools to eliminate that trait from the Dalmatian breed and yields clues to the cause of similar problems in humans. The findings will be published Nov. 7 in the scientific journal Public Library of Science.

"This defect, which in dogs is peculiar to the entire Dalmatian breed, has been reported for nearly a century and was probably unintentionally introduced as breeders worked to select more distinctive spotting patterns," said veterinary geneticist Danika Bannasch, lead author on the study.

"It is now possible that this trait can be removed from the breed by crossing Dalmatians with the normal offspring of the original Dalmatian-pointer breeding that occurred in the early 1970s," she said. full story here

My Dad featured in Unang Hirit!!!!

Hello guys, its sembreak time so i have an ample time to write again here in my simple blog.
And its has been forsaken for a long time coz of my studies. But still i have good news to you folks. Remember last October 15, 2008, my Dad was featured in Unang Hirit TV show of GMA7. I thought it was a joke when he text me " son Im in a Unang Hirit this morning so keep watching me ok".
So i woke up in bed and eagerly turn the TV on and click it on a kapuso channel. And patiently waiting him on a dog segment of the show. At last after half an hour of waiting i saw Ms. Jolina Magdangal and Ms. Pia (dunno what her surname is) had a small interview with my Dad who was with his dogs name Charles and Negra and Pippay, all are american cocker spaniel breed dog.
They featured my Dad's dogs and ask my Dad whats the best care for a dog like them.
Unfortunately my Dad's nephew doesn't have a camera nor camphone that morning. So they didn't have a photoshoot of that special morning. All the proof i have are those poeple watching him that morning and throw him a tons of calls and asking about the dogs and how to avail pups from him.
But Im happy to see my Dad on national TV. And Im proud of him coz, even hes not as good as top breeder is, hes the one who have a chance to see on television as a good breeder.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10, 2008 (Reuters) — Scientists using DNA testing have confirmed the second-known instance of "virgin birth" in a shark -- a female Atlantic blacktip shark named Tidbit that produced a baby without a male shark.The shark came to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach not long after being born in the wild and lived there for eight years with no males of the same species, said Beth Firchau, the aquarium's curator of fishes.

The 5-foot (1.5-meter) shark died after being removed from the tank for a veterinary examination, and a subsequent necropsy revealed that Tidbit was carrying a fully developed shark pup nearly ready to be born, Firchau said.

Demian Chapman, a shark scientist with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University in New York state, performed DNA testing that showed the pup had no father. Virgin birth such as this is known as parthenogenesis.

A year ago, Chapman used genetic testing to confirm that a hammerhead shark at a zoo in Omaha gave birth to a pup in 2002, also after parthenogenesis.

"It tells us that the original case we documented last year was not some fluke of nature. This is something that might be more common than we think it is, and widespread among sharks," Chapman said in a telephone interview.

Parthenogenesis also has been documented in Komodo dragons, snakes, birds, fish and amphibians, Chapman said.

It occurs when a baby is conceived without male sperm fertilizing the female's eggs. In the type of parthenogenesis seen in sharks, the mother's chromosomes split during egg development.

How the sharks do it is unclear. Chapman said they may use a hormone to trigger eggs to develop in this manner in the absence of males. Or perhaps if eggs remain unfertilized with no males around, a certain fraction develop into embryos.

"It's a finding that kind of rewrites the textbooks a little," Chapman said. "It just goes to show how the ocean keeps its secrets very well. And the sharks in particular."

"Of course, sharks are being killed at such a rate that unless we do something to stop that, we're not even going to learn all their secrets before they're gone," Chapman added.

The findings appear in the Journal of Fish Biology.

The weather matches the mood here on Wall Street. Stormy and sluicing down with rain.
Hopes were high of a deal to bail out the banks. But when talks in Washington hit a road block late on Thursday those hopes were dashed.
The collapse of Washington Mutual, America's largest banking failure, affords the markets a glimpse of things to come. If no agreement is reached to relieve financial companies of their bad assets more US banks will go out of business.
Staring over the abyss
There's some reassurance that Washington Mutual has been rescued by JP Morgan Chase.
If no deal is reached before the weekend then share prices could go into a sharp downward spiral.
But even that mighty bank has limited resources and cannot always be called upon by the Federal authorities as the buyer of last resort.
The pivotal moment for the US financial markets came in the middle of last week, when ordinary Americans withdrew massive amounts of dollars from money market mutual funds, which they use like savings accounts and are thought to be as good as cash.
That scared the authorities who found themselves staring over the abyss into a complete seizing up of the financial system.
More huge withdrawals from money market funds came yesterday, as the talks in Washington faltered. It's not a good omen.

Furious owners not told of kennel cough in quarantine

Owners of dogs imported into Australia via the Spotswood AQIS quarantine station in Victoria are furious that they were not informed prior to the arrival of their dogs that the kennel cough virus was present in the complex.

Animals coming into Australia are subject to the strictest regulations you will find anywhere in the world. Yet despite this, the virus has resurfaced at Spotswood, with staff restricting movement of dogs within its boundaries for over 3 months now.

James Camac will get his Australian Silky Terrier bitch out of quarantine on June 11. She is due to whelp a litter of puppies the following week. He told Dog News that the first he had heard of kennel cough at Spotswood was when staff told him on his first visit, on May 12, that he could not walk his bitch on the grass. "All I have been able to do is carry her to the hydrobath and back", he said.

Any blog on the June 8 Sulu kidnapping of the ABS-CBN news team and their "fixer" Professor Octavio Dinampo has to begin with a wish for the safe and speedy release of the remaining captives. At the back of many media professionals is the sense of, "there but for the grace of God..."
Over the past few days I have pondered hard on whether now is a suitable time to write a piece on safety and security of journalists in such situations. It is a matter for debate to be sure - yet I think the answer has to be "yes" if it gets just one journalist to carefully consider when the risk of following a story outweighs the benefit of securing a story. Time spent on good risk assessment is never wasted and I encourage those who have not done any formal safety training to click on the project's safety and security pages.
Meantime amid the column inches published so far on the kidnapping, the June 13 editorial and cartoon in the Philippine Daily Inquirer are well worth reflecting upon. The cartoon which shows a TV crew interviewing a shadowy gunman in the jungle and inside the huge jaws of a menacing head labeled Abu Sayyaf should be cut out and pinned on every newsroom notice-board – perfectly summarizing as it does, the risks journalists face every time they seek face to face interviews with insurgents and/or bandits. Aftershocks demolish China homes, todays news

Two further aftershocks have destroyed more than 420,000 houses in the Chinese region hit by a massive earthquake two weeks ago, state-run media say. Many of the homes appear to have been empty, but six people are said to have been critically injured in the tremors. They came as thousands of people were moved from near a lake formed by landslides, amid fears the water could breach banks and deluge the area. The official death toll from the 12 May quake in Sichuan province is 67,183.
About 20,790 people are listed as missing, with more than five million people homeless since the earthquake. As the mountainous region continues to be shaken, 63 people were injured, including six critically, in the latest aftershocks in Qingchuan county, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reports. One of the aftershocks measured magnitude 5.7, according to the US Geological Survey. The Eurasier Dog, todays featured dog breed

The Eurasier dog originated in Germany in 1960, and came about as a result of crossing three different breeds: the Chow Chow, Wolfspitz and Samoyed. It was bred initially with the intention of being used as a watchdog and as a family-friendly pet.
Physical Characteristics
The Eurasier is classed as a medium-sized, Spitz-type breed of dog, weighing between 40 to 70 pounds. It has a tapered muzzle on a wedge-shaped head, a powerful jaw, and eyes which are slightly slanted and usually dark in colour. The dog's ears are small and triangular shaped, with curved tips, and a very distinctive feature is that it has a blue tongue! It has a thick bushy tail that arches over its back and for this reason it is often confused with the Siberian Husky.
The Eurasier grows to approximately 24 inches in height, with its body length generally greater than its height. It has a double-coat of hair - a thick undercoat with a looser, medium-length outercoat. The hair on its face, ears and the front of its legs is short, and the breed can be of any mixed colour with the exception of white. White patches or an all-white Eurasier indicates it's not been pure bred according to the standards set by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale 1.
Behavioural Characteristics
The Eurasier is a placid dog, generally very loyal to its owners and their immediate family. It can be wary about strangers and needs to be watched when strangers are around - especially if they're in close proximity to the dog's owner and family. It's not known to be a persistent barker, so when it barks it's usually to alert the owner that a stranger is about or something is wrong. It is always on the alert, one of the character traits that makes it a good watchdog.
The dog generally doesn't like to be left alone for long periods and has an activity level best described as moderate. That being said, it requires firm handling and discipline. A minimum of an hour a day of vigorous exercise is recommended, and the dog enjoys being off the lead in suitable environments and having a good run around; it doesn't like to be kept caged or in a kennel.
Potential In-bred Health Issues
As with any specially-bred dog, certain health issues become common to the breed, and the Eurasier is no exception. Some of the more common things to watch out for are possible eye disease and hip displacement. It's not uncommon for them to put knee joints out also, medically referred to as luxating patellas. As with all dogs, temperament can change as they get older, and they can become 'grumpy' or sometimes even aggressive. It was thought this aggressive behaviour could be as a result of them being bred primarily as watchdogs, though there is no firm evidence to support this. It is more likely the result of the dog's normal ageing process.
Grooming
This is usually best left to an expert groomer due to the dog having a double coat of hair. Use a wide-toothed metal comb to keep the long fur free from tangles but don't over-comb or brush too hard as this will damage the protective nature of the coat. It's fine to bathe the dog occasionally but allow the fur to dry naturally after a rub down with a towel. It's not recommended to use a hair dryer, although if the dog is being shown at a dog show, for instance, then it has been known for hair dryers to be used to 'fluff up' the hair.
Eurasier Trivia
The Eurasier is, in general, an ideal family pet. It's loyal, friendly and is not known as a 'yapper' or 'barker'. It enjoys being in company but is difficult to train in specific tasks so discipline is essential. That being said, they are no more difficult to house train than any other pup. There are only around 200 registered Eurasiers in the UK, small in comparison to their home of origin, Germany.
When this breed was started in 1960 it was initially just a crossing of the Chow Chow with the Wolfspitz and was called a Wolf-Chow. Later that year it was crossed with the Samoyed and renamed 'Eurasier'. The breed was eventually recognised in 1973 by the German VDH/FCI Veterinary Association and other bodies worldwide, including the UK Kennel Club.
When the breeding programme started, the intention was not to go for a refined, uniform appearance but to ensure good character traits that would make a good watchdog as well as being a calm, family-friendly animal. This is still the guiding principal in breeding today; Dr Erik Zimen wrote the following about the main character trait of the Eurasier in Der Hund, München, in 1992:

UN raises Burma cyclone estimate, todays news..

The UN has sharply increased its estimate of those severely affected by Burma's cyclone to 2.5m people. The figure was revised up from the 1.5m previously thought to be in need, following the storm 12 days ago. Since Cyclone Nargis struck, hardly any foreign aid workers have been allowed into Burma to hand out relief supplies.

Latest Burmese official figures put the death toll at almost 38,500 with 27,838 more missing but the Red Cross warned as many as 128,000 could be dead. China's south-western Sichuan province, up to 5,000 of them in just one county. Many more are feared killed and injured in other parts of the country after the quake, which had a magnitude of 7.8, struck at 1428 local time (0628 GMT). At least 50 bodies have been recovered from the rubble of a school where an estimated 900 students were buried.

President Hu Jintao has urged "all-out" efforts to rescue victims. The epicentre of the earthquake was about 92km (57 miles) from Chengdu, Sichuan's provincial capital. The first US aid flight to Burma following the devastating cyclone nine days ago has landed in Rangoon.
The US spent days negotiating with Burma's military government to gain permission for the aircraft to land.
The junta has admitted that parts of the worst-affected region remain cut-off, but the generals are still refusing entry to foreign aid workers.
The official death toll has risen to almost 32,000, with close to another 30,000 missing.
But aid agencies fear 1.5m could die if help does not come, and estimate that 100,000 have already perished.
An official from Save the Children in Burma told the BBC that about half the people affected by the cyclone were receiving help.

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc.'s stock took a beating Monday after Microsoft Corp. withdrew its $47.5 billion takeover bid, but the punishment wasn't as severe as many analysts anticipated because investors suspect the rivals eventually will renew their mating dance.
Although Microsoft has publicly indicated it will focus on measures besides buying Yahoo in its bid to make its Internet division profitable, several analysts predicted the software maker will revive its bid in the summer or fall if Yahoo can't snap out of a two-year funk that exposed it to an unwanted takeover in the first place.
"Should the frustration of (Yahoo) shareholders come to a boil, we believe (Microsoft) could re-enter the picture, essentially playing the role of the white knight," analyst David Hilal of Friedman, Billings, Ramsey & Co. wrote in a Friday research note.

SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft Corp. has withdrawn its $42.3 billion bid to buy Yahoo Inc., scrapping an attempt to snap up the tarnished Internet icon in hopes of toppling online search and advertising leader Google Inc. The decision to walk away from the deal came Saturday after last-ditch efforts to negotiate a mutually acceptable sale price proved unsuccessful.
Microsoft was willing to pay $47.5 billion, or $33 per share, up from the bid's current value of $29.40 per share, according to a letter from Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer to Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang. But Yahoo demanded at least $53 billion, or $37 per share, according to Ballmer.
That would have been nearly double Yahoo's stock price of $19.18 at the time Microsoft first made its bid a little over three months ago. "Clearly a deal is not to be," Ballmer wrote.
A spokeswoman for Sunnyvale-based Yahoo didn't immediately return a call seeking comment. The decision to walk away came as a surprise, given that many analysts believed Microsoft wanted to close the deal badly enough to either sweeten the offer or pursue a hostile takeover — a risky maneuver that would have required an attempt to replace the Yahoo board that spurned rejected the bid.
But Ballmer said he concluded that pursuing a so-called proxy battle was "not sensible." "Our discussions with you have led us to conclude that, in the interim, you would take steps that would make Yahoo undesirable as an acquisition," Ballmer wrote to Yang.
But Yahoo hasn't necessarily faded from Microsoft's crosshairs.
The software maker conceivably could renew its bid later this year if Yahoo can't bounce back from more than two years of financial lethargy. Should Yahoo's turnaround efforts flop, many analysts believe the company's stock would sink into the mid-teens and open the door for another takeover offer that would be more difficult to rebuff.
For now, at least, Microsoft appears to believe it has enough internal weapons to chip away at Google's dominance of the booming Internet ad market. "We have a talented team in place and a compelling plan to grow our business through innovative new services and strategic transactions with other business partners, " Ballmer said.

The Parañaque City government has ordered the intensification of the city’s anti-rabies program, saying dog bite cases usually go up in summer.

Rabies is a deadly disease transmitted by rabid dogs to other warm-blooded animals, including humans, through saliva that get into bites or scratches.

“Due to the seriousness of this disease, it is necessary that all pets be vaccinated every year, especially that it is provided free of charge to the public by the city government in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture,” Parañaque Agriculture Officer head Fe Ferolino said.

Mayor Florencio Bernabe said city officials are striving to vaccinate all dogs in the city; make the public aware of ways rabies can be prevented and eradicated; and promote responsible pet ownership.

Parañaque residents are encouraged to coordinate with the City Agriculture Office at telephone number 820-7464 for schedules of continuing anti-rabies vaccination in their respective barangays.

Blogging - bad or good??

Last saturday i watched Jessica Soho's " Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho" on GMA 7, one of her topics was about blogging. As we watch the said documentary program, she started to quote blogging saying the bad side and the good side. I thought it was really that bad as my family knows that i am also a blogger.
She featured the fellow housewife doing blogging as her theraphy for her lost son. Then followed the aussie guy as we all know, doing an exposure using his blog. Remember him?
What brings my attention was blogging is not only writting your ideas and recording your everyday chores, but its also writting an information publish in a whole world. So the danger is in the writter himself.
As like me, im doing this just like a housewife who lost his son. Im making blog as my hobby same as i earned money from it. Like the girls featured in Jessica Soho's documentary program she also earned money from blogging. I started doing blogging when i watched it on Mel & Joey program, they featured blogs as a way of living.
As a student i was interested to know how it was. So i try searching online how to make money from my machine. At first my family laughing at me as i enter my room the whole day and doing writting even copying from old magazine.
My father even told me it was an old time foolish things coz no one will pay you money for not even knowing who you are, how old are you and what are you. Coz im not even a good writter, dunno if all my grammar is correct.
But thanks for my non stop searching until i found it. Now my father smile at me everytime i return the mocked from him. But the good thing is i gave him his cigar allowance everytime i got paid. And he even proud of me, for as my age now i know how to earned money online.
Now i do blogging not only for my fathers dogs and for my everyday activities but also for my everyday needs.
Now all my classmates reads all my blogs and asked me how i did that. I always say that when you do something, do it whole heartedly and patiently. And thanks for GMA 7 Jessica Soho for featuring this carrer, Blogging....

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is thinking of adding high-tech features to cards which verify identities of subsidized rice beneficiaries. In a radio report, DSWD secretary Esperanza Cabral said that the cards will soon contain bar codes which will trigger an alarm when scanned.
Besides discouraging the use of fake cards, it will also prevent individuals from buying government-subsidized rice and then selling them at higher rates. “We will place bar code systems so that the cards whose bar codes do not match will trigger an alarm when scanned.
That way, unscrupulous individuals will not get cheap rice," Cabral said on government-run dzRB radio.
Cabral said that this initiative is separate and independent from another program, called the “Beneficiary Identified for Government Assistance (BIGAS) numbers," which will be issued to local government units to prevent the proliferation of fake cards.
“We are taking all measures to make sure the cards will not be easily faked," she said.

Japanese scientists have reacted angrily to media reports that surplus whale meat is being sold as pet food.
A UK conservation group said last week that Japan's research programme was landing so many whales, unwanted meat was being turned into dog food.
But the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) in Tokyo said less than 100kg of a species not covered by a global ban was sold to a pet food manufacturer.

The ICR said Japan does not have a glut of whale meat.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ICR's director general criticised claims made by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) and the media's reporting of them.
"This is an indictment on western media who do not question the information they receive on whaling and instead further reinforce falsehoods and wrong assumptions," said Dr Hiroshi Hatanaka. Read full story on this site.

I just came back from my week long vocation in Zambales my aunties hubby town.. A 250 km north of Luzon. Its verry fun having a long summer vocation on that place together with my dog Popoy, my american cocker spaniel dog .. We used to go to the beach which is only 5mins from my titas house, we start swimming as early as 7 in the morning till noon. As we ussually observed we were the only family using the private resort, a distant relative of my uncle who is now in Guam. His son, my cousin and my other cousins using the huge cottage as far as i know is free for us.
The Ocean looks so calm and verry clear crystal water in dimmed morning until its shines by the sunlight in the afternoon. What brings my attentions is the little boy walks in the ocean waiting for his father to arrived came from fishing. Hes only 3 or 4 years old if im not mistaken. I asked him whom his waiting then he replied his waiting for his father. His little footprints embeded on the sands for he wore nothing aside from his short.
I asked him if he have his breakfast then he said he never even have his dinner last night coz his father left them nothing only but water and coffee and no sugar. At his age hes already smart saying that when his father will arive he will fall in line in the school buying an NFA rice for this is the only rice they can buy.
I tell my cousin about the rice issue, i thought this place is a rice fields in the north then why there is a falling in line of people here buying for a NFA rice? He simply said that rice here are already gone or sold out in buying station. And now they are the one suffer for that dillemma.
The only one cheap here is a kilo of dilis. The father of that little boy got when they arrived. In a whole day and night of fishing the only fish they got is what we called tamban and dilis. And now they sell it for as low as fifty pesos a kilo, they got arround 20 kilos of that fish and thats is much for a day of fishing. The only problem is they are 7 fisherman in a boat or in a group.
As long as they will sold out that bunch of fish they will devided the amount in 7. How this little boy will buy that NFA rice and a small piece of chicken or pork for their lunch or dinner? If his father will take out the sum of money for as less as two hundred pesos.
Then i asked myself im still lucky coz i was here for vocation and nothing else to think but how to enjoy life of a small boy like me. Im also lucky for i never even skipped dinner or breakfast in my families table.
Or am i lucky coz my father is not a fisherman nor a farmer? But the only thing i know is im lucky coz i have my father who is even seperated from my mom, still not forsaken me... And thats my father.. my only father...

ELY, Nev. - A dog that ran off during a road-trip rest stop apparently made her way nearly 80 miles across Nevada's high desert and two mountain ranges to return home a week later.

Moon, a Siberian husky, was reunited April 14 with owner Doug Dashiell, who had last seen her April 6 near Railroad Valley, about 77 miles from his home in Ely.

Moon, who is nearly 2 years old, was no worse for the wear, with the exception of stinking like a skunk that apparently sprayed her somewhere along the journey.

"I've had trouble with her running away before. She's always come home," Dashiell said. But he didn't expect her to show up after a week had passed."

After seven days — no way," he told the Ely Times for a story Thursday.

Then the White Pine Veterinary Clinic called Dashiell and told him Moon was back in town. She had wandered up to an Ely residence where Alvin Molea took her home, fed her and gave her a place to sleep.

Molea called the clinic because the dog was wearing a tag from it.

The dog's journey would have taken her across the White River and Ward mountain ranges.

The English Cocker Spaniel is a breed of gun dog. ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – An ancient burial cave was discovered in the Philippine island of Mindanao, south of Manila and officials have sealed the site to prevent looting of artifacts, many of them jars made from clay.

It was not immediately known whether there are other treasures in the cave which was accidentally discovered by quarry diggers on Wednesday in Maitum town in Sarangani province.

The latest discovery in the village of Pinol was near another ancient burial site discovered in 1991 where burial jars, shaped in different human forms, had been recovered inside Ayub cave.

Lingling Jabel, owner of the quarry site, informed local authorities about the find and the site was immediately sealed and security forces are guarding the cave where several burial jars have been recovered."

The quarry site is more or less half a kilometer away from Ayub Cave. The archaeological find at Ayub Cave consisted of anthropomorphic burial jars that date back nearly 2000 years ago. The anthropomorphic potteries of human figures depicting various facial expressions are associated to the Metal Age in the Philippines," the local government said in a statement.

"I feel happy that we have found another valuable artifacts that would help us understand more our history as a people not only in the Philippines, but probably in the whole Southeast Asia," the mayor of Maitum, Elsie Perrett, said.

Dr. Eusebio Dizon, curator of the Archaeology Division and chief of the Underwater Archaeology Section of the National Museum, has described Ayub Cave as "the most significant cave in Mindanao" and its finds as "unparalleled in Southeast Asia."

A team of experts from the National Museum are expected to arrive in the town to inspect the new cave.

The site had been dated to A.D. 70 to 370 and 5 B.C. to A.D. 225. The radiocarbon dates were obtained from the soot samples taken from the small earthenware vessel found inside one of the anthropomorphic burial jar.

The jars are unique and they are like portraits of distinct individuals, of specific dead persons whose remains they guard, described the burial jars in a book entitled "Faces from Maitum," written by Dizon himself after the 1991 discovery of the Ayub cave.

The provincial government described the cave as a unique and fascinating assemblage of archeological find - human faces and figures in earthenware- that depicts Sarangani's cultural wealth was excavated here.

It said the recovered potteries were used as secondary burial jars. Its coverings were molded as human heads emulating different facial expressions of happiness, contentment, and even a trace of desolation."

Such were shaped artistically tracing the most conservative detail of the human face that can still be seen in the broken fragments of the jars outside the cave... retaining their natural color even up to now," it said.

Ayub cave is made up of Miocene limestone formation. The opening is about two meters wide and two meters high, sloping downward to at least 20 degrees angle and extending a length of 11 meters from the entrance.

Hundreds of pilgrims have visited Lali, the 1-month-old baby and her impoverished parents to touch her feet out of respect and receive blessings.
The baby has caused a sensation in the dusty village of Saini, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from New Delhi.
When she left the hospital, eight hours after a normal delivery, she was swarmed by villagers, Sabir Ali, the director of Saifi Hospital, said Tuesday.
"She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," Ali said.
The child apparently has an extremely rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces. All of Lali's facial features are duplicated with the exception of her ears — she has two.
Lali's condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.
"She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties," said Ali, adding that he saw no need for surgery.
Lali's parents, Vinod and Sushma Singh, were married in February 2007, according to news reports. Lali is their first child.
"Initially we had some problem in accepting the child but now everything is fine," Sushma Singh told The Hindustan Times. "She is just like any other child."

Oprah Winfrey dedicates show to her late dog

CHICAGO - Oprah Winfrey plans to dedicate a show investigating abuses at puppy mills to her cocker spaniel, Sophie, who died last month from kidney failure."

Sophie gave me 13 years of unconditional love. She was a true love in my life," Winfrey says on the broadcast scheduled to air Friday. (Advance remarks from the show were released Tuesday by Harpo Productions.)

The show features special correspondent Lisa Ling investigating puppy mills, which Ling calls "horrific" and "haunting."

While Sophie was not a product of a puppy mill and Winfrey's three current dogs were adopted from breeders, Winfrey says in the future she would look to adopt from an animal shelter.

The first manned, hydrogen-powered plane has been successfully tested in the skies above Spain, its makers say. The small, propeller-driven craft, developed by aviation giant Boeing, made three short flights at an airfield south of Madrid, the company said. It was powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which produce only heat and water as exhaust products.

The tests could pave the way for a new generation of greener aircraft, the company said. Boeing's chief technology officer John Tracy said the flights were "a historical technological success" and "full of promises for a greener future".

Small future Three test flights of the two-seater aircraft took place in February and March at an airfield at Ocana, south of Madrid. The plane was modified to include a hybrid battery and fuel cell system developed by UK firm Intelligent Energy.

The fuel cells, which create electricity by combining oxygen and hydrogen, were used to power an electric motor coupled to a propeller. Other organisations have demonstrated solar-powered planes During take-off the planes batteries were used to provide an additional boost, but whilst in the air, the plane relied entirely on the cells.

Boeing said the plane has a flying time of 45 minutes but tests were limited to around half that time. Although the test had been successful, the firm said it did not believe fuel cells could be the primary power source for large passenger aircraft.

However, it could be used as a secondary source of energy for large planes, according to Nieves Lapena, the engineer responsible for the test flights, but this may take some time to develop. "In my opinion, we are talking about a delay of about twenty years," she said.

Green skies Hydrogen-powered planes have been flown before, but never with a human pilot onboard. In 2005, California-based AeroVironment successfully completed test flights of its Global Observer craft which was powered by liquid hydrogen. The hydrogen-powered plane is capable of carrying two people.

Other companies are also seeking to develop more environmentally-friendly planes, amid concerns over their contribution to climate change. Earlier this year, the airline Virgin Atlantic conducted the first commercial flight powered partly by biofuel.

And last year, defence firm Qinetiq flew a solar-powered plane for 54 hours, smashing the official world record for the longest-duration unmanned flight. Zephyr, as the craft was known, could be used for military applications, as well as for Earth-observation and communications. Other unmanned prototypes have been shown off by the American space agency Nasa.

However, in 2010, Swiss balloonist Bertrand Piccard plans to launch Solar Impulse, a manned plane in which he will attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

To carry the precious payload, the craft will have a huge wingspan of 80m (262ft), wider than the wings of the Airbus A380. As the plane is piloted by only one person at a time, it will have to make frequent stopovers. The current plan is for the journey to be broken into five legs each lasting between four or five days.

As people have become more health conscious, so have they been paying more attention to the health needs of the furry members of the family. To this end many animal lovers have become aware that the majority of commercial pet foods contain unhealthy ingredients and have shifted instead to sharing the refrigerator and cupboards. While natural, fresh food is far healthier than byproducts and preservatives, keep in mind that the foods listed below are known to be toxic to cats and dogs because of the different ways animals metabolize them.

Chocolate: Although many people are aware that chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, it's something that is commonly left on a table or counter top. Dogs may tear into a box of candy when the opportunity presents itself. In large quantities, chocolate causes coma and death. In lesser quantities, it will cause gastrointestinal problems including diarrhea. The degree of toxicity depends on the weight of the animal and the amount and type of chocolate consumed. Semi-sweet and bakers chocolate, for instance, contain more theobromine than regular chocolate, making them even more toxic to animals. Dogs love chocolate, so don't let taste be a test of what is healthy. Anything containing cocoa or chocolate should be avoided.

Grapes & Raisins: Though it isn't clear to scientists just what makes grapes and raisins toxic to both cats and dogs, even a relatively small amount can damage the kidneys. For this reason it's unwise to feed these to your pet, even if small amounts are tolerated. Also avoid giving bits of cookie or other foods that contain raisins.

Garlic, Onions, and Powders: Whether fresh, cooked or powdered, garlic and/or onions can be found among the ingredients of many prepared meals, including baby food. Garlic and onions can be toxic to cats and dogs because sulfoxides and disulfides found in them can damage red blood cells and lead to anemia. Onions are more problematic than garlic, but both should be avoided. If preparing a meal for yourself that will contain garlic or onions, consider preparing a side portion without these ingredients for your animals.

Macadamia Nuts: Macadamia nuts are soft, light-colored nuts often used in cookie recipes. They are considered toxic to dogs because they tend to cause gastrointestinal upsets, lethargy, vomiting and muscle tremors or stiffness.

Mushrooms: Various species of mushrooms are toxic to dogs, and can cause shock and death. Effects will differ depending on the type ingested, but avoid feeding any type. Pluck "backyard mushrooms" that might sprout on the lawn, as these are known to be toxic to canines.

Tomatoes and tomato plants: Tomatoes of all kinds are toxic to cats, as are parts of the tomato plant. Ingesting as little as a cherry tomato can cause severe gastrointestinal upset.

Chicken Bones: Though not toxic, chicken bones can get stuck in the roof of the mouth, throat and intestines and should be avoided, according to many veterinarians. Splinters of chicken bones can also become lodged internally.

Other foods to avoid include raw potatoes, especially those containing green spots; turkey skin; nutmeg; and anything with caffeine, including tea. Alcohol and hops should also be avoided as alcohol poisoning can lead to coma and death. Do not allow your pet to rummage through the trash, as moldy food contains toxins that can cause serious illness.

Since many of the signs of toxicity are similar, call your veterinarian immediately if your pet appears distressed, lethargic or in pain. Bloody stools or vomiting are also possible signs of toxic poisoning. Gastrointestinal problems can lead to gas build-up until the stomach becomes distended or bloated and hard to the touch. This is a painful condition that can cause the stomach to burst if not treated. The good news is that, in most cases, treatment for toxic poisoning can be successful if administered in time.

Feeding cats and dogs a healthy, balanced diet of natural foods as described by many veterinarians today is a great improvement over processed commercial pet food. By following a few simple rules, you can ensure that pets or animal companions can potentially lead longer, healthier and happier lives.

Their research shows that a new piece of software is able to classify dog barks according to different situations and even identify barks from individual dogs, a task humans find challenging.

The aim of Molnár and colleagues’ experiments was to test a computer algorithm’s ability to identify and differentiate the acoustic features of dog barks, and classify them according to different contexts and individual dogs. The software analyzed more than 6000 barks from 14 Hungarian sheepdogs (Mudi breed) in six different situations: ‘stranger’, ‘fight’, ‘walk’, ‘alone’, ‘ball’ and ‘play’.

The barks were recorded with a tape recorder before being transferred to the computer, where they were digitalized and individual bark sounds were coded, classified and evaluated.
In the first experiment looking at classification of barks into different situations, the software correctly classified the barks in 43 percent of cases. The best recognition rates were achieved for ‘fight’ and ‘stranger’ contexts, and the poorest rate was achieved when categorizing ‘play’ barks. These findings suggest that the different motivational states of dogs in aggressive, friendly or submissive contexts may result in acoustically different barks.

The software could reliably discriminate among individual dogs while humans can not, which suggests that there are individual differences in barks of dogs even though humans are not able to recognise them.

The authors conclude by highlighting the value of their new methodology: “The use of advanced machine learning algorithms to classify and analyze animal sounds opens new perspectives for the understanding of animal communication…

3,000 QC dogs receive free anti-rabies shots

More than 3,000 dogs from several barangays in District 1 in Quezon City received free anti-rabies vaccination in the ongoing campaign initiated by Councilor Elizabeth A. Delarmente.
Now on its second year, the campaign seeks to provide dogs within the populated district anti-rabies shot to protect individuals, notably children, from the harmful effect of dog bites.

The Anti-Rabbies Vaccination campaign is being done in coordination with the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and the Quezon City Health Department.
Delarmente or Tita Beth to her constituents, said more than 6,000 dogs were treated to anti-rabbies shots within District 1 last year.

She said, "there is a big probability that the number of dogs wihin the district would have multiplied this year, thus, we decided to set aside additional vaccines for the purpose."

Delarmente, assistant majority floorleader, said that the group-made up of doctors from the BAI and the QC Health office, are conducting vaccination right at the house of pet owners.

Also, she reminded dog owners of an existing ordinance banning dogs from wandering in streets.
Authored by her, the measure directs barangay and community leaders to arrest and lock-up these stray animals in holding areas within the barangay.

Of the 37 barangays in District 1, the Anti-Rabbies team has, so far, visited barangays Platok, Del Monte, Bungad and Salvacion, among others.

American Cocker Spaniel

The American Cocker Spaniel is a breed of dog that originated in the United Kingdom and was brought to Canada and the United States in the late 1800s. American Cocker Spaniels were given their own AKC Stud Book in the early 1900s.

By 1946, the English Cocker Spaniel was distinct enough in type from the "American" variety, that the American Kennel Club established it as a breed separate from the English Cocker Spaniel.

It was given its own Stud Book and that left the "American" type to be known as the Cocker Spaniel in the United States. They are in the sporting breed group of dogs and are the smallest of their group. American Cocker Spaniels were used to flush out birds and prey from the brush so their masters could shoot them.

Color
For North Americans conformation shows Cockers are divided by the breed standard into three varieties: black, ASCOB (Any Solid Color Other than Black) and parti-colors. Black Variety includes: solid blacks and black & tan. ASCOB includes solid colors ranging from silver, to light cream (buff) to dark red and brown and brown with tan points. Parti-colors have large areas of white with another color(s) and must be have at least 10% coloration (not more than 90% white).

Parti-colors include: black & white; black & white with tan points (referred to as tri-colors or "tris"), brown & white, brown & white with tan points (referred to as a "brown tri"), and red & white. Roans are shown in the Parti-color variety and can be black (referred to as "blue roans"), red ("orange roan"), or brown ("liver or chocolate roan"); with or without tan points. In a roan coat, individual colored hairs are mingled in with the white.

Sable coloring is seen in solids or Parti-colors, but no longer can be shown in conformation by the American Spaniel Club, although it can be shown in Canada and in Europe. Merle is a highly controversial pattern, as it is debated whether it is a result of breeding to another breed. Cockers cannot be registered as merles with the AKC. It is not recognized by the American Spaniel Club and cannot be shown in conformation.

Temperament
Their temperament is typically joyful and trusting. The ideal Cocker temperament is merry, outgoing, and eager to please everyone. They can be good with children and usually sociable and gentle with other pets. They tend to be soft dogs who do not do well with rough or harsh training. The popularity of the American Cocker Spaniel led to a considerable amount of irresponsible breeding in an attempt to keep up with the demand.

Health

American Cocker spaniels have health problems including separation anxiety, and the common dog illnesses. Ear infections are also common.

The Sussex Spaniel is a breed of dog developed in England. It played a part in the foundations of the Field Spaniel and is very similar in appearance to the Clumber Spaniel. It is used as a Gundog and in Dog Shows.

Appearance
The breed is long-bodied, muscular and heavily built. Its head is broader in the skull than the English Cocker Spaniel and its wrinkled brow gives it a kind, gentle, and sometimes slightly sad expression. The tail is usually docked except in countries where docking is not permitted. Its bones are quite large for a short-legged dog.

Coat and colour
The only acceptable colour is golden liver with hazel eyes. The coat is thick, either straight or slightly wavy and does not curl. The nose and eye-rims must be of the same colour as the coat.

Size
The Sussex Spaniel is short and should be no taller than 13 to 15 inches at the withers. The acceptable weight range is between 35 and 45 pounds.

History
In 1795, Mr. Fuller of Rosehill park, Hastings in East Sussex, England began breeding dogs for a special purpose-Gun dogs to work in districts where the terrain was rough and the undergrowth very dense- which meant that a spaniel was needed which could give tongue or to alert the hunter on his quarry.

This was a trait not desirable in any other spaniel. So Mr. Fuller decided to cross various dogs like the now extinct liver and white norfolk, the Field Spaniel and possibly some early springer spaniels.

The Sussex Spaniel was one of the first breeds admitted into the stud book by the American Kennel Club in 1884. As the name implies, the breed originated in Sussex, England in the 18th century where it was used as a hunting dog. Because of its short legs and narrow body the breed could easily maneuver through the undergrowth, which made it the ideal hunting companion.

The breed lost what little popularity it had in the 1940's. In 1947, only 10 sussex spaniels were registered in the English Kennel Club.
Today this breed is more common in the United States than even in England.

Rescuers with sniffer dogs and heat-sensing cameras are searching rubble in New York for survivors and victims of a crane collapse.
Four construction workers were killed when the giant crane toppled in Manhattan's affluent East Side.
At least 17 were injured in what Mayor Michael Bloomberg called one of the city's worst construction accidents.
It destroyed a four-storey townhouse and demolished parts of five other buildings.
On Sunday construction crews positioned a second crane to help remove pieces of the toppled crane, and begin removing piles of bricks and debris from the street.
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said rubble was being painstakingly removed, sometimes by hand, to prevent further collapses.
The crane, which stood 19 storeys high, was being used in the construction of a new high-rise apartment building.

Snakes don't eat fugu, the seafood delicacy prepared from blowfish meat and famed for its poisonous potential. However, should a common garter snake wander into a sushi restaurant, it could fearlessly order a fugu dinner. The snakes have evolved resistance to the blowfish poison, tetrodotoxin (TTX), by preying on rough-skinned newts, which also secrete the toxin. Some newts are so poisonous that they harbor enough TTX to kill a roomful of adult humans. Why would a small animal produce such an excessive amount of poison? The answer lies in the evolutionary back-and-forth between newts and garter snakes. In a new study Charles Hanifin, a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station, and his co-authors say that snakes in some areas may have prevailed in the evolutionary arms race between predator and prey.

Most toxic amphibians in the world

Some populations of newts produce enough TTX to kill thousands of mice or 10 to 20 humans. Ounce for ounce, Hanifin said, they are even more toxic than South America's famed poison dart frogs.
"Some populations of these newts may very well represent the most toxic amphibians on the planet," Hanifin said. The poisonous newts have even killed off humans. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports the case of a 29-year-old man who died after swallowing an 8-inch-long newt on a dare. These incidents aside, the newts rarely harm humans. It is safe to handle the newts with bare hands, since the toxin is not absorbed through the skin.

Escaping the arms race

At first glance, the newt and garter snake populations seem to be evenly matched. The most toxic newts are found in the same areas as highly resistant snakes and areas without toxic newts house only non-resistant snakes. Data on the garter snakes came from Hanifin's collaborators, Edmund Brodie Jr. of Utah State University and Edmund Brodie III of the University of Virginia, who measured snake resistance to TTX by injecting the animals with the toxin and measuring how fast they subsequently slithered. To get a closer look at the snake-newt interaction, Hanifin and colleagues tested 383 newts from 28 locations where the Brodies had previously examined garter snake TTX resistance. Hanifin found that snakes were pulling ahead of the newts in several places. In one third of the locations, the most toxic newt could still be eaten by the least resistant snake. This means that all snakes in the population do just as well regardless of their TTX resistance level and there is no evolutionary pressure for the snakes to develop stronger resistance.

Collecting and testing newts

The newts' toxicity means they can afford to be lax about evading rubber-booted researchers and Hanifin caught most of the animals by hand. He said he did not envy the snake collectors, who chased the rapid-slithering animals through grass and underbrush. Future directions of Hanifin's research include learning more about human disease by exploring the genetics of resistant garter snakes. TTX blocks electrical signaling in nerve cells by stopping up a sodium channel and TTX-resistant snakes have a modified channel that the toxin does not recognize. In humans, defects in similar sodium channels can lead to serious illness, including some types of epilepsy and insight into sodium channel biology could help treat these diseases.

Chow Chow, or Chow, is a breed of dog originating from China, where it is referred to as Songshi Quan (Pinyin: sōngshī quǎn), which literally means "puffy-lion dog." It is believed that the Chow Chow is one of the native dogs used as the model for the Foo dog, the traditional stone guardians found in front of Buddhist temples and palaces.

Appearance

The Chow is a sturdily built dog that is square in profile with broad skull and small, triangular ears that are rounded at the tip. The breed has a very dense coat that is either smooth or rough. The fur is particularly thick around the neck, giving the distinctive ruff or mane. The coat may be one of five colors including red, black, blue, cinnamon, and cream. Individuals with patchy or multicolored coats are considered to be outside the breed standard. Chows are distinguished by their unusual blue-black/purple tongue and very straight hind legs, resulting in a rather stilted gait. The blue-black/purple tongue gene appears to be dominant, as almost all mixed breed dogs who come from a Chow retain the tongue color. This is not to say, however, that every mixed breed dog with spots of purple on the tongue are descended from chows as purple spots on the tongue can be found on a multitude of pure breed dogs.

Today the Chow Chow is most commonly kept as a companion dog. Their keen sense of proprietorship over their homes paired with a sometimes disconcertingly serious approach to strangers can be off putting to those unfamiliar with the breed. However, displays of timidity and aggression are uncharacteristic of well-bred and well socialized specimens. The proper Chow owner will be just as willful and stubborn as the Chow they keep, thus weaker-willed individuals would be best served to evaluate their commitment in controlling an animal who is happy to take over any household.

History

The Chow is a unique breed of dog thought to be one of the oldest recognizable breeds. Research indicates it is one of the first primitive breeds to evolve from the wolf. Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest breeds of dog. From what records survive, some historians believe that the Chow was the dog described as accompanying the Mongolian armies as they invaded south into China as well as west into Europe and southwest into the Middle East during 12th Century, although a Chinese bas-relief from 150 BC shows a hunting dog similar in appearance to the Chow. Later Chow Chows were bred as a general-purpose working dog for herding, hunting, pulling and guarding.

Genetic Cancer Link Between Humans And Dogs Discovered

Cancer researchers at the University of Minnesota and North Carolina State University have found that humans and dogs share more than friendship and companionship -- they also share the same genetic basis for certain types of cancer. Furthermore, the researchers say that because of the way the genomes have evolved, getting cancer may be inevitable for some humans and dogs. Their findings are published in the journal Chromosome Research, in a special edition on comparative cytogenetics and genomics research. Genomes are divided into chromosomes, which act as nature's biological filing cabinets with genes located in specific places.
"Many forms of human cancer are associated with specific alterations to the number or structure of chromosomes and the genes they contain," Breen said. "We have developed reagents to show that the same applies to dog cancers, and that the specific genome reorganization which occurs in comparable human and canine cancers shares a common basis."
More specifically, Breen and Modiano found that the genetic changes that occur in dogs diagnosed with certain cancers of the blood and bone marrow, including chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), Burkitt's lymphoma (BL), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), are virtually identical to genetic abnormalities in humans diagnosed with the same cancers. According to Breen and Modiano, dogs are good research subjects because they develop the disease spontaneously, and many of the modern breeds have developed over the past few hundred years using restricted gene pools. This selective breeding has preserved the genetics of a breed. It has also made some breeds more susceptible to certain cancers. These factors, coupled with the high degree of similarity between the genomes of dogs and humans, provided the researchers with an opportunity to compare the genomes and study the evolutionary genetic changes associated with cancer.

Hybrid Human-Animal Embryo Research Approved In The UK

Two research groups in the United Kingdom have been given permission to use hybrid human-animal embryos in research which aims to lead to the development of new therapies for debilitating human conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and stroke. Newcastle University stem cell scientist Dr. Lyle Armstrong, who is based at the North East England Stem Cell Institute (NESCI) at the International Centre for Life in Newcastle, has received a licence from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to carry out research using human-animal cytoplasmic embryos. Another group -- the Stem Cell Biology Laboratory Wolfson Centre for Age-Related Diseases, at King's College London -- has also received a research license by HFEA to carry out research using hybrid embryos.

Dr. Armstrong says: “The award of the HFEA licence is great news. We initially applied for approval to use cow eggs as a means to understand the way they can convert skin cells into embryonic stem cells. Finding better ways to make human embryonic stem cells is the long term objective of our work and understanding reprogramming is central to this."
"Cow eggs seem to be every bit as good at doing this job as human eggs so it makes sense to use them since they are much more readily available but it is important to stress that we will only use them as a scientific tool and we need not worry about cells derived from them ever being used to treat human diseases," he said.
"Now that we have the licence we can start work as soon as possible. We have already done a lot of the work by transferring animal cells into cow eggs so we hope to make rapid progress.”

Baguio Dog, Dagul, Won US Animal Award, todays featured articles..

The dog that saved his master's life at the height of typhoon Chedeng just won the Lewyt Award for Heroic Compassionate Animals of the North Shore Animal League of America. The winner for the month of September, is Dagul, the well-publicized dog who warned his master, Wilmar Castillo, of a mudslide that was about to devour their home at Dominican Hill. If not for the timely warning of Dagul, Wilmar could have been trapped inside their house (which was totally buried by the landslide).
It is recalled that on June, amidst the strong rains and winds of typhoon Chedeng, Wilmar was singing in their karaoke, when Dagul kept on barking near their door. Wilmar ignored Dagul, and instead proceeded to his room for a late nap. Dagul did not stop, instead, he followed Wilmar to his room, barking incessantly. Thinking that somebody might be outside, Wilmar opened their main door and proceeded outside to see what was going on. Just when he was a foot outside, an avalanche of mud toppled their house, and Dagul was trapped inside. Luckily, Dagul was well and alive when he was rescued the day after.

Dagul and his family's home after the landslide. Dagul's price money will be used to help rebuild it. Dagul's heroic story was read by animal lovers in America who in turn got in touch with Linis Gobyerno's Executive Director, Freddie J. Farres, to work on a nomination for the much coveted monthly award in the US. Thus, on the first week of June, the nomination was immediately forwarded to a first level judge, the Editor of the Animal People Newspaper, Merritt Clifton, who in turn endorsed the same to the upper level judges. On June 27, Friday, Clifton informed Linis Gobyerno, that Dagul was chosen as an awardee for the month of September.

Dagul's owner, or shall we say, family will receive a monetary award in the amount of US$500.00. The formal awarding, according to Clifton, will be held in Hong Kong, during the Asia for Animals Convention, in which North Shore Animal League of America is one of the sponsors. The Castillo family are so happy and thankful that Dagul was chosen. Willy, the head of the family, said that the money will be used to rebuild their house (even if it would mean a small shack). To this date, the family lives in a garage, courtesy of the family of former Mayor Andres Bugnosen. The Castillo's related that the DSWD has only promised them the amount of Php2,500.00 as assistance.
It is seldom that the Northshore Animal Welfare League America gives the award to an animal outside of America. However, Clifton said to Farres that Dagul was chosen because the judges believe that the hero dog's exemplary deed can be utilized in the fight against the dog meat trade in the country, more particularly Baguio and the Cordilleras. Linis Gobyerno took on the fight against dog meat trading since last year. Farres said that it is an ambitious project, but with the help of every animal lover worldwide, the illegal practice can be considerably reduced if not stopped.
There's one thing that makes Dagul's story unique. The 6-year old Dagul, as related by Wilmar and his father Willy, was a former stray. He is an askal (asong kalye) or mongrel. Dogs, even askals, according to Dr. Anatalia Castrence, Dean of BSU College of Veterinary Medicine, are 50 times more sensitive than humans, which explains how Dagul was able to know the danger that would befall his master. The Neapolitan Mastiff is a large, ancient dog breed that can be traced back to about 168 BC. This massive breed is often used as a guard and defender of family and property due to the protective instincts and their fearsome appearance. The breed is reported to have been used for fighting against Lions in the Colosseo and other ancient Roman arenas.

Appearance
Neapolitan Mastiffs are characterized by the loose skin over their entire bodies, with wrinkle and folds on the head; and a large dewlap. Some breeders produce Mastino with vast amounts of skin and wrinkle, large bone size and this is known as W.H.A.M meaning Wrinkle Head And Mass, while others detest this type preferring a more lean athletic appearance. There are 4 coat colors; Black, Grey(Blue), Mahogany and Tawny(blonde) , each color may also come with reverse brindling appearing as brown silver or beige. They can sometimes also have white on the chest and feet, males also on the sheath of the penis. White anywhere else on the body is a fault. Ears can be cropped or uncropped though since January 1st 2007 it is now banned to crop ears or dock tails in Italy as it is in the rest of Europe.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) standards, male Neapolitan Mastiffs should measure 26–31 inches (66–79 cm) at the withers, weighing approximately 150 pounds (70 kg)(200 in really large males), whilst females should be 24–29 inches (61–74 cm) and weigh around 110 pounds (50 kg). Body length should be 10-15% more than that of the height.

The Neapolitan Mastiff is fearless and extremely protective of its home and family. They prefer to be with their family and to remain in and around the home always. They are not a dog to go and wander off. As a guardian breed it is very wary of strangers but usually on seeing that their master is relaxed they soon accept them. The Neapolitan Mastiff rarely barks unless under provocation, renowned for sneaking upon intruders as opposed to alerting them of their presence first. As a breed the Neapolitan Mastiff can be extremely stubborn, but learns things very quickly. Once it understands what its master wants, it obeys.
The Neapolitan Mastiff is not a breed for everyone and certainly not a dog for beginners. Children should be taught to respect these dogs. Neapolitan Mastiffs should be well socialized at an early age either at ring craft or puppy clubs organized by your veterinarian to avoid over-protectiveness. They will be very protective even with extensive socialization. Additional protection training is unnecessary because they are natural guard dogs and always have been. Obedience training is very important in this breed. The Mastino is generally very tolerant of pain due to the breed's early fighting background and the fact the skin is loose on the body. They also are renowned for drooling especially after drinking or if they get excited.

History
The Neapolitan Mastiff is a descendant of the Molossus. Not many decades ago, "molossian of Epirus" was still a term to be found in some Greek glossaries on dog breeds, I think more so than others as a term of historical reference. Epirus was one of the states of Ancient Greece, between Corfu and Pindus, neighboring Albania and Molossia or Molosside, whose inhabitants in the fourth century BC provided them with the reigning dynasty. It was described by Oppiano as a dog of large size, snub-nosed, truculent with its frowning brows,v not speedy but impetuous, fighter of great courage and incredible strength, to be employed against bulls and wild-boar, undaunted even when confronted with a lion. Quite clearly Oppiano here is precisely referring to the Molossian. Then Oppiano alludes to the corrugations of the skin in the area of the forehead - another characteristic peculiar to the Molossian.
The Romans, who in 168 BC defeated King Perseus of Macedonia - and who also made Albania one of their provinces in 148 BC - imported dogs of great power from those very areas into Rome, which were instantly called Pugnaces Britanniae as they were so ready to do battle against any wild beast. It was frequently used in the Roman arenas pitted against lions, bears, and gladiators for entertainment. Strabone wrote in about 30BC, that it required four molossians to confront a lion.
As dogs of war, they fought alongside the Roman legions, and in this way they were spread throughout Europe. Eventually the descendants of the Roman Molossian splintered into several different Mastiff breeds known across Europe
